Audubon Bird Mural Project Tour

The goal of the Audubon Mural Project is to create murals of over 300 North American birds in the northern Manhattan neighborhoods of Hamilton and Washington Heights where John James Audubon spent the last 10 years of his life. We will walk mainly along Broadway between 148th and 164th Streets, seeing about 30 murals. Because the artists have license to represent the birds in any way that they choose to, there is great variation in the styles of painting. And the murals range from lovely panels that fill a window frame to spectacular works covering the entire side of a building. All of the birds painted have been identified as being threatened by climate change. We will also visit John James Audubon’s impressive gravesite in the Trinity Church Cemetery. Binoculars are an asset for seeing murals above street level.
